Caregivers

What traits do the best caregivers share?

Being one of the best caregivers comes with many benefits.

For example, when you’re a good caregiver:

  • Your client receives good care, which makes them happy
  • Your manager appreciates that you’re a good caregiver
  • You feel happy with yourself for being a good caregiver

Without a doubt, being a great caregiver can improve your life and the life of others.

In this blog, we are going to tell you what the best caregivers have in common. By reading this information, we hope you will understand how to be the best caregiver that you can be!

1. The best caregivers… are patient and kind people

One of the top things that the best caregivers have in common is that they’re patient and kind people.

As a caregiver, you work directly with another person every day. All people, including your client, have good days and bad days. Maybe one day your client will be in a bad mood and won’t be as kind as usual.

As a caregiver, you have to remember that people have good and bad days and to be kind to them no matter what.

If you can be kind and patient with someone no matter if they’re making you upset, then you have one of the best traits a caregiver can have.

2. The best caregivers… are open to suggestions

Another trait that the best caregivers have in common is being open to suggestions.

As a caregiver, it’s important you can take suggestions from both your manager and your client. Above all, it’s important that you can take these suggestions without getting your feelings hurt.

Both your manager and your client at times will give you suggestions so that you can be a better caregiver.

Most of the time, suggestions are not meant to say your work is bad, but only are meant to improve it. This is why it’s very important that you’re open to suggestions.

The best caregivers even ask their manager or client for suggestions. By doing this, they’re able to improve themselves without someone necessarily telling them to do it first.

3. The best caregivers… make sure their client is happy

Another thing the best caregivers have in common is that they always make sure their client is happy.

As a caregiver, your #1 goal is to make sure that the person you’re caring for is happy throughout the day.

The best caregivers make sure that their client is happy by:

  • Asking them if they need anything
  • Keeping track of their health- like if they showered, bathed, used the bathroom
  • Making them meals they will enjoy

If you’re able to do these things, your client will likely always remain happy. Remember that it’s especially important to ask your client if they need anything. This is the #1 way to make sure that you have a satisfied client.

4. The best caregivers… respond fast and communicate with their manager often

Another common trait of the best caregivers is that they respond fast to their manager fast. They also communicate with their manager often.

When you have a manager, they will appreciate that you respond to their emails or texts fast. It’s their job is to make sure that you’re doing well in your job, so if caregivers tell their manager how they’re doing, a manager’s job becomes easier.

In other words, if you respond to your manager fast, then they will be able to do their job more easily.

In order to make sure they respond fast, the best caregivers have their email logged in on their phone. They also have the notifications of their email turned on so that any time their manager emails them, they will see it and be able to respond quickly.

The best caregivers also make sure that their ringer on their phone is on/ that their manager is able to text them.

By doing these things, you can be sure that you’re communicating well with your manager.

5. The best caregivers… double check that everything is in order at the end of their shift

Another thing the best caregivers have in common is that they double check that their client’s house and health is in order before they leave at the end of their shift.

When a shift comes to the end, the best caregivers want to leave knowing that their client will be okay until they comes back for their next shift. This means that as a caregiver you will make sure that your client:

  • Has had enough food and water
  • Has gone to the bathroom
  • Has taken necessary medications
  • Has a phone near them to use to call in case of an emergency
  • Has a clean space to sleep in

By making sure your client has these things, then you can be sure that you did all you could to make sure they will be okay until you see them next.

To summarize:

The best caregivers tend to have a lot of things in common. If you’re able to have the qualities that we listed above, such as if you’re able to (1) be patient and kind, (2) be open to suggestions, (3) make sure your client is happy, (4) respond fast and communicate often, and (5) double-check that everything is in order for your client at the end of a shift, then you will have the traits of the best caregivers.

Being a great caregiver and having these qualities will make the lives of so many people, especially your own, much better.
